Good Teacher???
One day a man addressed Jesus as “good teacher”. He replied by asking “why do you call me good.” Now I think that all of us see Jesus as the epitome of a good man. Even those who do not believe that He is the Son of God will generally agree that He was at the least a good teacher.
But isn’t it interesting that Jesus didn’t wish to judge Himself as good, anymore than He was willing to pass negative judgment on those regarded as “evil doers” like the woman at the well, the one caught in adultery or any of the drinkers of wine and gluttons he was accused of associating with. Why he even associated with the hated tax collectors, the scum of the earth, at least to those from whom the taxes were collected.
The only time He ever spoke negatively was in response to those who considered themselves of possessing the knowledge with which to judge others and “good” enough to use it.
Do you suppose that He understood what George was saying in his last post?
There are those who constantly offer fruit from the knowledge of good and evil and there is the One who offers only life. If there is to be healing for the nations it is more likely to come only from the One offering life, from the cross, the tree of life and apart from judgment.
I am so grateful to be able to count on Jesus as my friend and counseler knowing that he doesn’t want me to look at anyone as good or evil. Instead he encourages me to see others as a part of who I am teaching me by his grace to love each person I meet as I love myself. Great post Steve.
