The Sin of The World

John 1:29 The next day John sees Jesus coming to him and says, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

So just what was “the sin of the world” And were you taught that Jesus took away “sins” or “the sin” of the world?

It may seem like there is no difference, but there is. There was one sin that was imputed to the ENTIRE human race regardless of their works. That sin was UNBELIEF. Now Evangelical Christianity will and does teach that Jesus took away all sin past, present & future. But if you ask them about this “sin” unbelief they will proceed to tell you that while Jesus took away the sin of unbelief that only means that now since Jesus believed, people now have the “ability” to believe if they so choose. They will tell you that humans had not the ability to believe until Jesus did it first. And now if you will only believe in Him yours sins will be forgiven. Well as my friend and co-blogger Bruce says, “Good Luck With That”! If it takes mine, yours or anyone else’s belief to be forgiven then we are ALL in DEEP DUNG! So my question today is this…… Did Jesus take away the sin of unbelief?

This is a very interesting question you ask George. As you quote Jn 1:29 , it certainly does say that Jesus takes away or can I say ( removes) the sin of the world. This does raise many questions for sure, for one is that one common sin the sin of un-belief? It seems it may be. 1st John 2:2 says He is the propitiation for our sins ( plural), and not for ours only but also for the sins of the WHOLE WORLD! Either way we can thank the Lord that He took care of the whole mess at once when He went to the cross.
To get back to your question, I don’t believe I have ever heard it asked quite that way, so I have never considered this before. I believe that un-belief has been forgiven. I am reminded of Rom’s 11: 32, For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all. Realizing this its plain that we were all chucked in the same boat of unbelief so that God could fully display His mercy for all through Jesus Christ.
As verse 33 says in the same place, how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! I’m not sure I can answer this question you ask very well I’m afraid, but I will ponder it some more and see what comes. Thanks for challenging me this day to look at this question on our belief system a little closer.
Have a grace day my friend.

The reality is that God not only forgives the sin of unbelief but he also destroys it, replacing it with belief. That’s exactly what happened to Paul while on the road to Damascus. God destroyed his unbelief and replaced it with belief.

    Don,
    I AGREE!
He authored and finished belief i.e. faith!
Unbelief is no longer sin nor is it a requirement that we could never meet anyway

    Peace

    Romans talks about sin (singular).

Wherefore, as by one man SIN entered into the world, and death by SIN; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law SIN was in the world: but SIN is not imputed when there is no law.
    (Rom 5:12-13)

    and then….

Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where SIN abounded, grace did much more abound: That as SIN hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
    (Rom 5:20-21)

It can be debated endlessly but, call it what you will….sin, unbelief, disbelief, offense, transgression, missing the mark or what have you, all I know is that we had no part in bringing it into the world (Adam did that) and we have no part in removing it (Christ did that).

Because of Christ, sin and death, brought on by the sin of Adam, no longer reign but now grace reigns…in the person of Jesus Christ, Grace Incarnate. Adam brought on sin and death but Christ brought on grace and life.

Sin did, up to the cross, abound by bringing death to every man but grace did (it’s finished) much more abound….and that is GOOD NEWS.

George as steve said, sin abounded it had an end,but grace has no end at all.It has been established by the once and for all sacrifice of our savior who took away the first( the law of Sin and death brought about by the first adam) to establish us all in the second.(The law of the spirit of life which is in christ jesus the Lord.Goodnews indeed.

Thanks Steve as you have said it very well. You have covered the bases and really simplified this matter for me. When you seperate the first Adam from the second(Jesus) and see the effect of each on humanity this answers any and all the questions that arise. I know for me that bearing this in mind in the future will put down much confusion and argument.

It is interesting that “scholars” and preachers are always trying to get us to confess and repent of all our sins or we can’t be with God here or in Heaven.

“confess” (homologos) = same as the word. To agree with what God says about our sin. He says it is GONE. To repent simply means to change our mind. I wonder why preachers and religions always wants us to gnash, crawl, cry, weep, sweat, tithe, and repeat. I agree (homologus) that Jesus took (against our will) the SIN of all the worls, past and present,
    WOW. What freedom!

    See you in Indiana.

Great comment Chappy. I never saw that or heard it taught before. Sure shines a whole new light on our “confession being made into salvation” doesn’t it. When we agree with God, and see our sin as gone, our salvation (form our own previously confused thinking) is complete. We have changed our mind and it has been renewed. Awesome.

Good point Geo – about the ’sin’ of the world – which I am guessing was Adam? But wasn’t Adam not about un-belief (since he could see God in that story) – but decided not to follow God? Wouldn’t Jesus be seen as supplying a way to follow and know God ‘in-depth’? Is the ’sin of the world’ something similar to Adam’s betrayal of God – he lost a path back to paradise and that path disappeared – until Jesus came and smoothed that road again? I am talking about something I am not sure – I will have to delve deeper into this idea
