House Resolution 938

Please permit me a moment of lightness and a little gloating as anyone who knows me knows that I am an extremely avid fan of my home states flag ship college football team, the West Virginia Mountaineers. They have never made the Mountaineer fans more proud than they did on January 2, when against all odds, they soundly defeated a highly rated Oklahoma Sooner team. They accomplished this in spite of a heart breaking regular season ending loss to rival Pitt which cost them a trip to the BCS championship game and then loosing their head coach.

 Football: U.S. House Honors WVU Football

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives Monday passed a resolution introduced by Congressman Alan B. Mollohan that honors and commends the West Virginia University Mountaineer Football team for its landmark victory in the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Mollohan said the team’s impressive fight against the odds to emerge victorious from the bowl game with a national television audience was worthy of significant recognition. The resolution, H.Res. 938, reads:

Whereas the West Virginia University Mountaineer football team won the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, defeating the University of Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 48 to 28 in Glendale, Arizona, on January 2, 2008;

Whereas the Mountaineer football team has been a source of great pride for West Virginians throughout the years;

Whereas the people of West Virginia take their team’s triumphs and setbacks as their own in times of hardship and in times of prosperity;

Whereas the Mountaineers displayed uncommon intensity and determination in preparing for the challenge of meeting one of the best teams in the country in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl;

Whereas the Mountaineers executed an almost flawless game;

Whereas then-Assistant Coach Bill Stewart demonstrated true leadership and coaching skill by filling an unexpected coaching void, instilling confidence in his team and leading them to victory, thereby earning the admiration and gratitude of his fellow West Virginians;

Whereas the Fiesta Bowl Most Valuable Player on offense, Mountaineer quarterback Pat White, gave a brilliant running and passing performance that inspired his teammates, delighted his fans, and frustrated his opponents;

Whereas the Fiesta Bowl Most Valuable Player on defense, Mountaineer linebacker and native West Virginian Reed Williams, led his teammates in an outstanding defensive performance;

Whereas Mountaineer Senior fullback Owen Schmitt, through his steady play and gracious post-game words of victory, displayed the best qualities of team play and sportsmanship;

Whereas Mountaineer receiver Tito Gonzales demonstrated outstanding play with a 79-yard touchdown pass and showed a national television audience how important Mountaineer success was to his team and his state;

Whereas Mountaineer Freshman tailback Noel Devine gave a spirited and skillful performance worthy of his injured teammate and mentor, record-breaking tailback Steve Slaton;

Whereas the Mountaineers’ offensive line dominated the battle in the trenches, making possible the outstanding performances of White, Devine, Schmitt, receiver Darius Reynaud, kicker Pat McAfee and the other offensive stars of the day;

Whereas the Mountaineers’ attacking defense contained one of the best teams in the nation and forced the Sooner offense to yield the field time and again;

Whereas the Mountaineers finished among the top ten football rankings for three years in a row;

Whereas Mountaineer Athletic Director Ed Pastilong has instilled in the Athletic Department the highest standards of ethics and performance throughout his many years of leadership;

Whereas the Mountaineers and their new Head Coach Bill Stewart have brought great honor to themselves, their University and the State of West Virginia: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) Congratulates the West Virginia University Mountaineer football team for winning the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl; and

(2) Commends the team for demonstrating throughout the season the best qualities of teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship.

My Inward Jesus!

Do you believe Jesus is in you?  Now let me begin by saying to you that I believe he resides within every single human being, but the question is "Do you believe?"  Many christians today talk about Jesus living in them but it’s based solely on their invitation of Him into their hearts and they really are not sure.  Most christians that I have known who are honest live in a constant doubt of their relationship with Jesus.  Paul the apostle makes the following statement that speaks to this subject:

2 Cor 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you — unless, of course, you fail the test?

As you examine yourself, as you test yourself, do you not see JESUS IS IN YOU.  He didn’t say Jesus might be in you, he said JESUS IS IN YOU.  You may not believe it and fail the test of faith, but let us be clear that whether you pass the test of faith or not JESUS IS STILL IN YOU.  Now if you pass the test then by far you are way ahead of this challenging journey we call LIFE because you realize that there is a power within you that is beyond your control to destroy or ignore.

Now it’s also important to define this inward Jesus.  For me it’s quite easy for I see him within me as the best part of who I am, a part that has always been with me and never will leave me.  I see him as the Perfect Love that speaks to me when my love is imperfect.   I also see this same Perfect Love in everyone I meet.  Oh, I know sometimes it’s hard to see because of all the garbage that some people have collected into their lives, but if you look deep enough you will always see this Perfect Love I define as Jesus.

The following video is by Rabbi David Aaron on LOVE and even though I don’t know much about him I believe he makes my point in his own way.  Whether you see this inward connection as Jesus or by some other name it’s power is the same in all of us.  WE ARE ALL CONNECTED.  Wouldn’t it be great if we could all see this?

WOW!

Isaiah 29

 13Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.

According to Isaiah fear of God is but a precept that is taught by mere men and it is not of God. That very reason still stands in the church today. People draw near to God with their lips but their hearts are far removed from Him because of the fear, guilt and condemnation that is taught by men and women in the church today. As long as fear is taught, people cannot draw near to God in their hearts.

It’s time we quit listening to the precepts and writings that are taught of men and started listening to what the scriptures say. (The Scriptures being, the law, the psalms and the prophets)

Exploring My Thoughts!

As a child I was always fascinated with exploration.  I loved to go into the woods and explore looking for something new to be found.  I loved stories of pioneer days when men and women traveled into uncharted areas of the west looking for adventure.  Exploring the universe has always been exciting to me but now at age 56 I have found a new frontier that may be my greatest adventure of all.

Exploring my own thoughts is the greatest challenge of all.  Looking deep within and examining why I think a certain way or how I reach certain conclusions about life is fascinating to me.  This is my new frontier.  There is an old Buddhist’s saying that speaks to this.  Let me quote:

Whoever thinks as, from, or on behalf of, an entity which he believes himself to be, the more so if he tries to work on himself, by, with, or for such an entity – which is only a concept in mind – has not yet begun to understand what it is all about. – ‘Posthumous Pieces’ by Wei Wu Wei

I truly want to understand myself.  I have given up on understanding anyone else because I know I have way to mcuh work understanding myself first.  I think this frontier of exploring my own thoughts is vast and yet I am drawn to it more and more.  I don’t want to live as a robot that simply thinks as they are told to think.  I want to think with as much freshness and purity as possible.  To do that I must be willing to strip away all preconceived ideas about how I should think and begin to allow myself to explore.

To EXPLORE means you don’t know what lies ahead.  To EXPLORE means that what lies ahead might be very uncomfortalbe.  To EXPLORE means that what lies ahead might also be glorious.  It is an adventure that few are willing to take and yet it is the most important journey of our entire lives.

Socrates’ guiding rule was, "Know Thyself."  To do this one must be willing to explore this vast frontier of our thoughts.  I suspect that if more of the human race would take this journey there would be less war and greater appreciation for who we are as fellow travellers on this earth, but as I said earlier, I can’t worry about others until I find my own way in this great exploration of my own mind.

What I can do is share as I go.  Maybe if we would all share as we go it would make the journey a little easier.  Well anyway, that’s enough sharing for today.  I have some exploring to get done.

Happy Trails Ahead,

Clifford the Great Explorer

Osteen???

I saw on a message board that somebody was selling their tickets to the Joel Osteen "lecture" (coming up in Pittsburgh at the Mellon Arena in March). First of all, are people really that desperate for some encouragement that they’ll pay $20 a seat to see the Osteen Show? I was curious as to how the show was being promoted, so I snooped around the internet a little bit and discovered that the thing is actually SOLD OUT! But never fear, you can still get tickets online at RazorGator for $45 to $250! Better hurry!
