One important detail about Matthew that a fundamentalist of all people once told me, is that Matthew was not written to us, but to the nation of Israel as a whole DURING THAT TIME IN JEWISH HISTORY. I'm not sure if that adds anything to the discussion, but I've always tried to remind myself that Matthew is not talking to ME, even if the book of Matthew is helpful/hurtful TO me.
