Geo, Thank you for the lyrics. I could not understand all the words when he was singing. But, while he was singing I kept thinking , The Breath of Life is the answer to his question “What is the soul of a man?”
Actually Sue I would agree with him that the soul of a man is his thoughts OR MIND! As it says in this part of the song (Was teaching the lawyers and the doctors That a man ain’t nothing but his mind) That word soul means psyche. The soul is the mind, will and emotions of a person. It is the soul that needs salvation. All are REDEEMED but not all are saved. Salvation comes when the soul ie. the mind will and emotions become aware of the Redemption of the Spirit that took place 2008 years ago.
Peace
Geo

Geo, I agree this seems to be the meaning except there are people born without brains and live for a space of time. Would these humans then be nothing? I think not. So, what then is the soul? Because he first loved us - Sue
That person is body & spirit only Sue.
Unlike us who have body, soul and spirit whereas they only have body and spirit. It is the spirit and body that was redeemed by Christ. Salvation is for this realm and in the case you mentioned matters none. What mattered was that our body and spirit were redeemed.
Geo, sounds plausable - but - without the breath of life man could not have become a living soul - so - where did the spirit come from - 1)clay man 2) breath of life = living soul. Where did 3rd entity come from? Because he first loved us - Sue
The people you described previously Sue were not living souls but living (human) spirits and yes that spirit came from our Creator. I am not arguing with you though if you see it that way it is fine with me.
Geo, I am not arguing either - just trying to understand. I still don’t. If it upsets you for me to ask I won’t. I thought we were having a discussion. All comes from the creator, I just don’t see the 3rd entity introduced. I very well could have missed it. I do not claim to be smart I just question things I don’t understand. Because he first loved us - Sue
Not upset at all Sue.And yes we are having a discussion.
There are questions I can’t answer and I am comfortable with that.
PLEASE Sue don’t stop asking questions! I or we may not have the answers but keep asking! Your questions are of a kind and loving spirit and we welcome them. And again if no answer comes don’t take it as you are not being heard sometimes like I said I or we have no answer for that question.
Geo, I know there is not one person in the world who can answer all questions and that is ok. I certainly have no answer for most questions. I have never thought anyone at Boldgrace has all answers but I am grateful for the questions I feel were answered. I enjoy puzzles and other peoples ideas about scripture. Thanks to Cliff, Bruce, and you Geo I don’t worry about needing an answer to please God, but it is fun to probe for answers. If you come across the answer to this particular ? we are talking about please include me. Because he first loved us - Sue
Ok just so I am clear Sue.
What exactly is the question? I am not joking my old age is showing and I need you to clarify.
And you are so right on it is fun to ask and probe for answers together.
Geo, At creation the Body/ Breath of life = living soul (thinking person) 3rd entity Spirit/ when was it introduced? I have never been able to find all 3 - Because he first loved us - Sue
Sue, The word “soul” in Gen 2:7 has the following meaning:
OT:5315
T:5315 vp#n# nephesh (neh’-fesh); from OT:5314; properly, a breathing creature, i.e. animal of (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal, accommodated or figurative sense (bodily or mental):
The word Soul can be much misunderstood because it can mean just a living being (a thinking animal) or can represent something much higher when connected to the Spirit of God that is behind that thinking animal.
Unfortuanately this first living soul did not recognize the Spirit of God within and so the life lived was lived with all the emphasis on the animal part of man (living soul). Christ came along to show us something about ourselves that went beyond just being a living soul. He came to show us the breath of Life (God himself) revealed within this living soul and yet it is separate at the same time. Paul speaks of this:
1 Cor 15:45-49
45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being” ; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.
47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.
48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.
49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven.
Paul describes the first Adam as a “LIVING BEING”, and the second Adam a “LIFE GIVING SPIRIT”. Both had what we call the “Soul” but obviously one understood its identity much more clearly.
The first Adam did not bear the likeness of the man from Heaven because all his emphasis was on what he could see (his flesh). He did not recognize the unseen spirit that actually gave him life. Jesus on the other hand gave no emphasis to the flesh and fully recognized the Spirit within that He knew could never be destroyed.
Cliff, Thank you. If I had known this when I was young my bible stories to my children would have been so different. Can you imagine being told how much you are worth to God without the down side of hell, fire, and damnation as taught in our childhoods? (not a ? that needs an answer) I love it when you guys teach. Because he first loved us - Sue
Cliff, Yes this is a WOW - I’m studying it again today. I also want to say besides the Boldgrace writers I have also learned a great deal from other posters and I really appreciate your knowledge as well.
I believe in my heart that the greatness of this site is it’s inclusive nature that welcomes a collective wisdom that comes alive when we really learn to respect each other even in disagreement knowing that we are all striveing to get in touch with our true identity. I learn something every time I read a new comment. Thanks to all who contribute the deepest part of who they are.
*nods* Very excellent song by one of my favourites (Bruce Cockburn).

Geo, Could you post lyrics of this song? Because he first loved us - Sue
Here you go Sue:
I’m going to ask the question
Please answer if you can
Is there anybody’s children can tell me
What is the soul of a man?
(CHORUS:)
Won’t somebody tell me
Answer if you can
Won’t somebody tell me
Tell me what is the soul of a man?
I’ve travelled different countries
Travelled to the furthest lands
Couldn’t find nobody could tell me
What is the soul of a man
(Chorus)
I saw a crowd stand talking
I just came up in time
Was teaching the lawyers and the doctors
That a man ain’t nothing but his mind
(Chorus)
I read the Bible often
I try to read it right
As far as I can understand
It’s nothing but a burning light
(Chorus)
When Christ taught in the temple
The people all stood amazed
Was teaching the lawyers and the doctors
How to raise a man from the grave
(Chorus)
